One of the myths fostered by the pro Liberal press is that the Liberal party has the interests of country people at heart.
Not true, any party, Labour or Liberal can now rule, at State level anyway, at least with out winning a single country seat. The country vote is virtually worthless.
The free trade and globalization that "Honest" John supported so avidly will mean the opening of the flood gates to imported agricultural products like fruit, wine, juices... just about everything we grow here except lamb which we can't afford to eat more than once a week anyway.
That's how much Howard thought of the country people.

Hehe - interesting to see how a one line comment bagging John Howard can lead to so many lengthy posts

I personally come from a working class background but my parents leaned towards the Liberals. This was back in the 60's and 70's and things have changed as time goes by, but essentially I've come to view modern politics with a little disdain. Plus I've come to distrust what we hear in the media as I've seen how they lie (maybe not directly, but through omission of relevant facts). I could go on for ages but I won't as I don't want to bore anyone and besides I'm getting a little off topic

I just wish that those who disliked Howard would give him credit where credit is due instead of just dishing out criticism. It's like listening to a Collingwood supporter bagging anything that's not black and white (my apologies to non AFL fans

Now, now, I've given him every bit of the credit he deserves.

I think there is two things that can not be discussed in a forum or group, as we will all have our own different opinions and will never agree.  One is politics (as we all can see) and the other is religion.  My parents all ways taught us to be strong in our convicts and opinions however we also must be able to respect the convictions and opinions of others.  This I have also taught to my children and I believe it is a vital life lesson. EACH TO THEIR OWN!!!

Howard is a great leader, just look at the mess in the liberal party, now that he's not there.
K Rudd is very similar to Bracks.  He set up lots of expensive inquiries and achieved nothing.
Oops, sorry, I made a mistake, after reading the emperors booklet concerning his first 100 days in office, I now realise how good he actually is.

The key words there are 100 days Jeeves. We'll see what happens after 12 months eh?
Personally I think major change will come slowly. The American economy is a borderline basket case and will effect world markets. I think Australia has to align itself with Asia even more than it has.

It seems like it will take a lot less than 12 months, the rich are getting richer, especially with child care rebates and the poor will get poorer with major cuts to carer rebates.
It does seems the labor party is for the workers, as long as they earn $100,000 per annum or more.
As with aligning ourselves with other countries, it makes no difference, what we need to do is establish industries IN Australia and produce excellent products here.
We did once have major industries  operating in Australia, including aviation,  automobile,  etc.      These are now  in China and other countries with 'cheap' labor and little or no unionism.

Unfortunately it's part of our nature that we won't buy quality products if they are too expensive. If it works most people will buy the cheaper Chinese version.
You can't expect people to take paycuts to keep their jobs in Australia when prices, rents etc remain high.
I remember a few years back after one of the local car building industries had closed down; around the same time a farmers group from the River Land was protesting at Parliament house about the glut of cheap orange juice concentrate from the US that was flooding the Australian market.
Every last one was driving a fully imported SUV.

If John Howard was the "Worst Priminister ever" then where thas that leave Kevin Rudd?

Howard was a 'real Aussie' he went to heaps of sporting events, he was approachable on the street, he left Australia in so much profit that now Kevin Rudd has given us all to suck up to him on the thin preface that it will "Kick start the economy" Most Aussies have just used it to pay off debt anyway!

Rudd is a smug, dorky totally 'un-Australian PM you could get! Wait for a while and he'll show himself up!
